SP Agondo Moses Mlumun: A Model of Excellence and Integrity in Nigerian Policing
In an era where the credibility and efficiency of law enforcement are frequently scrutinised, some officers rise above the fray to personify integrity, professionalism and unwavering commitment to duty.
Superintendent of Police, Agondo Moses Mlumun, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Sunkani in Ardo Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, is one such officer. A native of Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, Mlumun has built a remarkable career grounded in discipline, service and strategic policing.
Strong academic and training background
SP Mlumun holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Philosophy, a background that reflects not only intellectual depth but also moral grounding. Over the years, he has augmented this academic foundation with an impressive array of specialised police training courses across the country.
He began with combat training at the Police Mobile Force Training College, Ila Orangun, Osun State in 2013. He later completed the Unit Commanders Training in 2018, and in 2020, undertook an advanced course in Administration for Police Mobile Force Officers at Ende Hills, Nasarawa State.
Understanding the evolving nature of crime and insecurity in Nigeria, Mlumun took part in the 2018 “Policing in Post-Insurgency Era” training timely considering the Northeast’s volatile security situation. He subsequently underwent counter-terrorism training at the Nigerian Army Special Forces Training School, Buni Yadi, Yobe State in 2019, and community policing training in Maiduguri in 2020.
Furthering his capacity for evidence-based policing, SP Mlumun recently earned a Professional Certificate in Critical Thinking for DPOs from the Metropolitan School of Business and Management, UK, on 30th April 2025. The course is a prerequisite to advanced training in Forensic Criminology and Investigations, signalling his commitment to evolving with the demands of modern policing.
Turning around Sunkani Division
Since his assumption as DPO in Sunkani, SP Mlumun has transformed the division into a model of proactive policing. His leadership has led to several major breakthroughs, including the dismantling of kidnapping syndicates, the recovery of illegal firearms, and the successful rescue of abducted victims.
He has also played a pivotal role in resolving communal conflicts in Tau and in addressing long-standing farmer-herder tensions in the area. His approach combines intelligence-led policing with dialogue and conflict resolution mechanisms.
Mlumun has also mediated peace between rival local security outfits such as the Hunters’ Union and the Vigilante Group, fostering collaboration in securing local communities.
Reviving police-community relations
Recognising that sustainable peace requires trust, SP Mlumun revived the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Sunkani. He has made community participation a key feature of his policing strategy, engaging traditional rulers, youth leaders, religious figures and local vigilante groups in security dialogue.
This inclusive approach has enhanced mutual understanding between the police and the community, improved intelligence gathering, and restored residents’ confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Recognition of excellence
In recognition of his outstanding service, SP Mlumun was recently honoured with the Best DPO Award in Taraba State Command by the Commissioner of Police, CP David Eloyonomon, PSC. The award underscores his operational brilliance, administrative competence and commitment to the rule of law.
A reputation built on character
Beyond his operational successes, SP Mlumun is widely respected for his incorruptible nature, sense of justice and fairness. Colleagues and residents alike describe him as firm yet approachable, principled yet compassionate.
In a region grappling with ethno-political tension and post-conflict recovery, his leadership offers stability and direction. His work exemplifies what professional policing should look like in a democratic society.
A beacon of hope for Nigerian policing
As Nigeria continues its long journey toward security sector reform and accountable policing, SP Mlumun represents the future. His blend of training, discipline, community engagement and moral character presents a compelling case for what the Nigeria Police Force can become.
To the international community and reform advocates, he is a model of law enforcement excellence in Africa, one driven by service, grounded in ethics and anchored in the people.
In honouring SP Agondo Moses Mlumun, we are reminded of a timeless truth: true service begins with character. And in him, character and service meet in rare and exemplary harmony.
SP Agondo Moses proves that even far from neon capitals or busy seaports, the Nigerian Police Force can be distilled to its finest elements: intelligence, integrity, and an inner light that refuses to dim—no matter how dark the bush path ahead.
