SAGAMU, OGUN — The Ogun State Police Command has clamped down on unrest in Sagamu, arresting 146 suspects in a sweeping joint security operation while warning residents against unlawful assembly and violent protests.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, speaking for the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, declared that the command would no longer tolerate actions capable of disrupting public peace.
The warning followed last week’s disturbance involving commercial motorcycle operators who blocked the Oba Erinwole GRA Road, grounding movement and escalating tensions across the town. The protest later spread to key public facilities, including the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), TRACE Office, and Sotubo Health Centre, disrupting essential services.
Police operatives swiftly dispersed the crowd, leading to the arrest and arraignment of 10 suspected ringleaders.
In a follow-up crackdown under “Operation Keep Sagamu Safe,” security forces carried out early morning raids on identified criminal flashpoints on April 13. The exercise led to the arrest of 146 suspects.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, Ogun State Community Security Corps, and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.
Police said the suspects are currently undergoing screening, with those found culpable to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Abeokuta, for prosecution.
Ojajuni warned that there would be no hiding place for troublemakers, stressing that the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on offenders.
He, however, commended the Sagamu Local Government, traditional rulers, and security agencies for their cooperation, noting that such synergy remains key to sustaining peace.
Residents were urged to remain law-abiding and channel grievances through lawful means, while also supporting security agencies with timely information.
The command reaffirmed its resolve to maintain order in Sagamu through sustained intelligence-led operations.
